Participants will engage in benchmark recovery, which includes:
  • Reconnaissance: locating NGS passive control monuments via GIS and field work;
  • Recovery: executing survey of recovered benchmark with proper documentation for submission to OPUS shared solutions;
  • Report: submission of findings to NGS and DENA GIS Specialist.
Additionally, participants will conduct field surveys to establish ground control for structure-from-motion photogrammetric products produced by both fixed wing and small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) flights. Park boundary markers and Bureau of Land Management survey markers are a secondary goal for survey- or mapping-grade recovery. Shorter mapping projects requiring immediate attention may arise throughout the season. The participant may also have the opportunity, in conjunction with the Alaska Geographic/Murie Science and Learning Center, to work with and lead small groups of youth (middle and high school students) through the concepts of GPS and benchmark recovery.

Upon successful completion of the GIP internship, the participant is eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award. This position is offered through the National Park Service's Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Internship Program in partnership with Environmental Stewards and The Geological Society of America.

This position is located in the National Information Services Center (NISC), Information Resources Directorate, National Park Service (NPS), Lakewood, CO. The Resource Information Services Division is the national program office and focal point for the NPS enterprise geospatial platform and digital information services. The incumbent will serve as a Senior Cartographer and Digital Visualization Specialist and technical expert on the development and integration of cartographic and other visualization representations of geospatial and other scientific data with responsibility for coordinating the development and implementation of policies and standards for enterprise cartographic applications, systems, and technologies.
