This 2-day, 16-hour course, with a focus on Alaska applications, is designed for those new to the world of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), or for those desiring a refresher on what makes GIS such a powerful workplace tool.

Using Esri's ArcGIS Desktop, you will learn where to find data, create maps, explore the data behind the maps, and apply methods to share your maps. You will also learn how to create and distribute powerful interactive maps using ArcGIS Online.

Training Announcement: Mastering GIS Concepts

Organization: Blue Skies Solutions, LLC
Location: TIPS Training Lab, 9th Floor, Atwood Building, 550 W 7th Avenue, Anchorage
Date(s): April 25-26, 2018; February 7-8, 2018

This is also a 2-day, 16-hour course with a focus on Alaska applications. It picks up where "Navigating GIS Concepts" leaves off. It is designed for those with a solid foundation in the basics of GIS and are ready to explore some of the more technical components of ArcGIS for Desktop and ArcGIS Online.

You will will learn to use the various methods of labeling in ArcGIS, to create new data and edit existing data in ArcGIS, to utilize Python scripting to help speed up your work processes, learn how data driven pages can create some amazing map books, and to use the primary geoprocessing tools within ArcGIS to perform spatial analysis and to create a model.

With ArcGIS Online, you will create a feature service of editable vector data, and also use ArcGIS Online to create a map application that allows users to add and edit data.

Job Posting: Geologist I

Organization: Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys, DNR
Position Type: Full-Time, Short-Term, Non-Permanent
Location: Fairbanks, Alaska

The Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) is recruiting for a Geologist I to help the Survey preserve its legacy of samples and data for future research. Using GIS, the incumbent will harvest sample locations and information from scanned oversized maps. DGGS database programmers will then associate the sample locations and data with DGGS samples stored at the Geologic Materials Center in Anchorage and in DGGS’ various databases.

Dates needed: March 1 – June 30, 2018

Hours: 30-37.5 hours per week, 37.5 hours preferred

Key responsibilities include the following:
  • Scan oversize maps
  • Digitize sample locations using ArcGIS 10.5.1
  • Record important information about the maps in DGGS’ online archiving application

Position requirements:
  • Experience using ArcGIS software
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • A basic understanding of geologic terms
  • Ability to work independently
