The Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented GIS Analyst to perform important grant-funded work: (1) prepare and quality control digital geologic data for incorporation in an authoritative statewide GIS database of Alaska geologic information and delivery to the national repository for geologic data managed by the U.S. Geological Survey; and (2) contribute to collaborative development of DGGS’ Alaska-wide geologic data management and delivery system, which uses an Alaska-pioneered, extended national data standard (AK GeMS) for geologic maps, ESRI ArcGIS software (Map, Pro, Enterprise, Online, etc.) and PostgreSQL database platform.

In addition to the standard Minimum Job Qualifications for a GIS Analyst 2, the following knowledge and skills are REQUIRED for this position.   • Full proficiency in ArcGIS Pro or, alternatively, ArcMap, to design, produce, and update thematic data and basemaps.
  • Knowledge and experience with GIS quality control procedures.
  • Knowledge of the ArcGIS Enterprise environment (ArcGIS Enterprise Portal and ArcServer), geodatabase administration, and PostgreSQL.
  • Experience with GIS-related programming and scripting languages (for example, SQL, Python, JavaScript).
  • Knowledge of geographic principles, standards-based cartographic science, visual communications, color theory, graphic design, typography, and computer-assisted map design and production.

DGGS is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Geologist who is interested to expand their knowledge of GIS and digital geologic map making. The incumbent will learn how to prepare geologic map GIS data for incorporation in an authoritative statewide GIS database of Alaska geologic information and the national repository for geologic data managed by the U.S. Geological Survey. DGGS' geologic data management system uses an Alaska-pioneered, extended national data standard (AK GeMS) for geologic maps based on ESRI ArcGIS software. Preparing GIS files for dissemination to the public and agencies is the primary duty of the position. As part of the DGGS Mineral Resources Section, the incumbent will also be a team member on geologic mapping projects and other DGGS projects as needed.

  • Some experience collecting detailed, accurate geological observations and samples.
  • Some experience conducting geologic fieldwork and mapping in remote locations and/or rugged conditions.
