These are Interdisciplinary GIS Specialist positions at GS-09 for the following job series: 0150 Geography, 0401 Biology, 1301 Physical Science, or 1370 Cartography. You must meet the basic educational requirement for at least one series and meet the additional specialized experience and/or education in order to qualify for this position.

These are term positions (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service.

Tasks/Duties
This position includes, but is not limited to the following duties:
  • Design, develop, support, and utilize GIS data and workflows.
  • Collect spatial data and create map products to support park needs.
  • Communicate effectively and good customer service.
  • Train, distribute, and support field data collection hardware and apps (GPS/GNSS).
  • Perform spatial analyses.

What you will be doing:

The incumbent is responsible for the administration, design, modification, and maintenance of complex and diverse GIS processes in support of environmental operations. This includes project planning/design, database administration, contract preparation/management, spatial data acquisition and analysis, information technology systems software selection/support, and spatial data equipment management.

Division mission and culture:

Our section's primary mission is to provide environmental oversight and management for AKARNG locations statewide. We accomplish this through staff training, soldier engagement, compliance site visits, and providing timely and accurate regulatory guidance. Our team helps keep the AKARNG mission-ready for State and Federal service.

Who we are looking for applicants with knowledge and experience in these areas:
  • ESRI ArcGIS and AutoCAD systems.

*NOTE*

The successful applicants must pass a federal background check in order to qualify for military base access, which is required with this position's work location on base. The background check will include fingerprinting. All job offers are conditional pending successful completion of the federal background check and issuance of a Defense Biometrics Identification System (DBIDS) card allowing base access. You must be able to maintain the clearance throughout your employment. AAUG Elections on 06/21

AAUG has had the same board since pre-Covid, and we are (finally) holding elections following the presentations on Wednesday, June 21!

Please join us to volunteer and help to select our board. Several of the current board members are happy to continue in the same or new roles, but we definitely need help to complete the slate of positions open so AAUG can continue coordinating presentations and training opportunities for the Alaska GIS community. Come learn more about these fun and helpful positions and remember, holding any board seat in a local GIS group earns points for GISP certification!

The following positions are currently open:
  • Associate Technician (Part-Time). Associate Technicians are involved in the day-to-day operations of data production and are embedded within a production team, and will aid in the processing and classification of remote sensing data and general operational efforts to support team functionality. This individual will learn to produce accurate and precise data products in a consistent and timely manner, and have a strong interest and aptitude for working with geospatial data.
  • Lidar Technician. This entry level position works to aid in processing and classification of remote sensing data and general production and QA/QC efforts across multiple disciplines within NV5. The Technician is able to produce accurate and precise data in a consistent and timely manner. This individual has a strong interest and aptitude for working with remotely sensed data across GIS and CADD platforms.
  • Lidar Associate Team Lead. The Lidar Processing Associate Team Leader plays a supporting role to the Team Leader and works collaboratively with other  Associate Team Leaders to facilitate successful project completion. This individual helps supervise a team of knowledgeable workers who perform all production tasks required to move a project unit through from post-acquisition to delivery.  Responsibilities of this role include  personnel management of the employees within the team, monitoring and mentoring for technical and professional development, and the tracking of individual KPI metrics of team members. In addition, Associate Team Leads help to identify technical workflow and process improvement opportunities, project benchmark monitoring, and data quality control. The Associate Team Leader stands in as Team Leader when that individual is out of the office or otherwise unable to perform Team Leader duties.
  • Bioanalytics Associate Team Lead. The Associate Team Leader plays a supporting role to the Team Leader, Technical Domain Expert, and Project/Program Managers within the Biophysical Analytics group. This individual helps supervise a team of knowledgeable workers who perform all production tasks required to move a project unit from data preparation to final report writing and delivery. Responsibilities of this role include facilitating technical workflow and programmatic process improvements, monitoring project benchmarks, and providing oversight of data quality control (QC). In addition, the Associate Team Leader supports personnel management of technician through analyst level team members by tracking Key Performance Indicator (KPI) metrics and providing professional mentorship. The Associate Team Leader stands in as Team Leader when that individual is out of the office or otherwise unable to perform Team Leader duties. This role will support production coordination and oversight for projects including, but not limited to, land cover classification, forestry analytics, and hydrographic modeling.
  • Project Manager- Geospatial Analytics. The Project Manager (PM) is responsible for the oversight and successful completion of multiple concurrent projects, ensuring consistency with company strategy, commitment, and goals. The PM will provide solutions to clients while working with diverse and potentially remote teams. The PM oversees all phases of a project and is responsible for project performance through effective management of project constraints, including scope, schedule, and budget. Responsibilities include project portfolio setup, progress tracking, kickoff and status meetings, and deliverable product quality verification. The PM will report financial metrics on a weekly basis and proactively take steps to flag and prevent budget variances. The PM works closely with production team leads to assign labor and closely manage level of effort and timelines.
  • Senior Analyst- Lidar Calibration. The Lidar Senior Analyst works to support the Lidar Team Leader(s), Associate Team Leader(s), and Technical Specialists to ensure data flow and proper tasking within the team. This individual provides oversight to technicians and other analysts in support of the team leadership. This position will work individually and as part of a team to support lidar data production in ArcMap, Microstation, and other industry-specific software packages. The Senior Analyst has knowledge of all aspects of the lidar calibration workflow and performs rigorous QA/QC. A Senior Analyst produces consistent finished products and works to develop process efficiencies and improve methodologies within the lidar calibration team. Within the Senior Analyst position, three distinct tracks will start to develop: Operations, Management, or Technical.
  • Analyst- Land Cover. An Analyst supports Senior Analysts to complete tasks with limited oversight. This position will work both individually and as part of a team to support data production in an ArcMap, QGIS, SQL Server and cloud environment; producing finalized data deliverables based on client requests. An Analyst will coordinate with the technical leaders and project managers towards the completion of project requirements. This includes providing technical support, quality control and training for technicians and contractors. The Analyst will also work toward identifying and developing process improvements and efficiencies. It is expected that areas of specialty may start to develop within this position.
  • Analyst. An Analyst supports our technical leaders to complete tasks with limited oversight. This position will work both individually and as part of a team to support data production in an ArcMap and CADD environment; producing finalized data deliverables based on client requests. An Analyst will coordinate with the Team Leader and Technical Specialists towards the completion of project requirements. This includes providing technical support, quality control and training for technicians. The Analyst will also support identification and development of process improvements and efficiencies. It is expected that areas of specialty may start to develop within this position. The detailed responsibilities, tasks, aptitudes and requirements will vary by customer focused team Program (lidar, imagery, analytics, etc.).
  • Senior Analyst. The Lidar and/or Imagery Senior Analyst works to support our technical leaders to ensure data flow and proper tasking within the team. This individual provides oversight to technicians and other analysts in support of the team leadership. This position will work individually and as part of a team to support lidar data production in ArcMap, Microstation, and other industry-specific software packages. This position may also work individually and as part of a team to support imagery data production in Inpho Suite, Agisoft, and other industry-specific software packages. The Senior Analyst has knowledge of all aspects of the lidar and/or imagery editing workflow and performs rigorous QA/QC and assists in training of analysts and technicians. A Senior Analyst produces consistent finished products and works to develop process efficiencies and improve methodologies within the lidar and/or imagery teams.
  • Technician. This position supports Analysts and Senior Technicians in the processing and classification of remote sensing data, and quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) efforts across hydrology, forestry and land cover projects. The Technician is able to produce accurate and precise data in a consistent and timely manner. Primary duties of a Technician in the Biophysical Analytics group includes classification of data through photo-interpretation, and vector digitizing.

Who we are:

Under the supervision of a Habitat Biologist III, this position has primary responsibility for maintaining and making annual revisions to the master statewide Anadromous Waters Catalog (AWC) dataset. There are typically hundreds of nominations to update the AWC each year; and the editing, geodatabases and metadata revisions, and production of new maps follows a tight schedule with deadlines that includes a Department and public review. Additionally, the position supports department staff by producing a variety of publication quality digital (geodatabases, data, project applications) and hard copy Geographic Information System (GIS) products (maps, figures), requiring a strong working knowledge of a variety of graphic and mapping software applications (ArcGIS, ArcMap, ArcPro, etc).

The mission of the Division of Sport Fish is to protect, maintain and improve the state’s fisheries resources. Alaska Statute (AS) 16.05.871 (the Anadromous Fish Act) is a keystone statutory protection for freshwater habitats of anadromous fish in Alaska, requiring the ADF&G to "specify the various rivers, lakes, and streams or parts of them" of the state that are important to the spawning, rearing, or migration of anadromous fish. The AWC and its companion Atlas are the media used to accomplish this specification and are adopted as regulation under 5 AAC 95.011. The primary purpose of the AWC is to inform land use and permitting decisions regarding habitats important to the migration, spawning and rearing of anadromous fish species.

Who we are looking for:
  • Professional level knowledge of and proficiency using ArcGIS software (ArcGIS, ArcMap, ArcPro) and related spatial data management products.
  • Experience creating publication quality electronic and hard copy products (maps and data), primarily in ArcGIS, for a variety of topics and subjects, including depictions of fish & wildlife distributions, annotations, point data, river hydrology, land status, topology, and administrative boundaries.
  • Experience reviewing and editing draft maps and spatial data layers to ensure accuracy and precision of final projects including data depiction, registration, and presentation.
  • Experience collaborating, planning, and developing spatial data projects by assessing staff needs and delivering ArcMap data, analysis, publication quality maps, KML (Google EarthTMfiles) or GPS files as requested.
  • Experience documenting GIS data layers by writing metadata following established standards, which often includes Federal Geographic Data Committee compliant metadata (i.e., national standard for metadata)

Minimum Qualifications:
  • One year of professional experience equivalent to GIS Analyst I with the State of Alaska. -AND- An associate's degree from an accredited college that includes either a GIS related concentration, a GIS certificate, or 9 semester hours (12 quarter hours) of GIS-related course work;
  • SUBSTITUTION: Two years of paraprofessional experience working in data collection, cartography, web-site development, GIS operations, or a related field will substitute for the required associate's degree.
  • SUBSTITUTION: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes either a GIS-related major or minor, a GIS certificate, or 18 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of GIS-related coursework will substitute for the required experience and associate's degree.
