Outreach Announcement

The Chugach National Forest (CNF) is seeking qualified, self-motivated, service oriented individuals interested in a 120-day detail/temporary promotion opportunity and/or permanent full-time position as GS-0401/0101/1301-7/9 GIS Specialist position for the Supervisors Office located in Anchorage, Alaska.

This position serves as a member of a team of three geographic information specialists that provide forest-wide service. The incumbent is responsible to work as a GIS team member, manages data life cycle management, and supports managers and resource specialists in the use of geospatial technology for land, natural resources and ecosystem management.

Brief Description of Duties:

As a member of the forest’s GIS team, this position provides support and service to Chugach SO and 3 ranger districts. This position assists with the development and use of spatial data and advanced geospatial applications for the Forest, and as well as the maintenance of the Forest’s spatial and tabular databases and associated national applications.

The incumbent will work with resource specialists to update databases, ensure regional and national data standards are met, ensure data accuracy, resolve errors and update metadata. Duties will also include manipulating and analyzing geospatial data to support management decisions, planning, and monitoring activities; compile data to create maps for resource programs, planning documents, management alternatives and other projects; provide informal GIS training and technical support to resource specialists and local GIS users; respond to information requests; and provide GIS support for Forest Plan Revision. Experience with ArcSDE, Spatial Analyst, Model Builder, LiDAR, ArcPad, Trimble GPS, Pathfinder Office, ERDAS Imagine, eCogniton, ArcGIS Online, PL/SQL, and Python is a plus.
