The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG), Division of Wildlife Conservation is seeking a full-time permanent GIS Analyst II to be stationed in Anchorage. This position creates digital cartographic (geospatial) data, performs spatial analysis, and produces map and other graphic products using automated (GIS) techniques. Under general supervision, incumbent must exercise independent judgment to determine the most effective and efficient method of creating, obtaining, manipulating and portraying geo-spatial data, including assessment of scale, density, placement and orientation of data, features and symbols, production methodology, and printing options.

Key responsibilities include the following:
  • Create geospatial data to support the division's research and management efforts.
  • Maintain and update geospatial datasets for various projects including permit and general season hunt areas, management/closed/controlled-use areas, and other areas.
  • Research and interpret written area descriptions to develop the best geographic representation of the area.
  • Digitize GIS data from hard copy photos, maps, hand drawings, graphics, and images.
  • Perform geoprocessing tasks and analysis to create new or modified datasets or statistical information.
  • Proof data and perform complex GIS editing functions.
  • Produce map products for hunting regulations, supplements, ADFG website.
  • Locate and acquire data from other agencies as needed to produce map products.
  • Support Division ArcGIS users with ad hoc data and mapping and analysis requests.
  • Aid staff with locating and manipulating GIS data sets.
  • Operate large format plotter, laminator, and trimmer board.

The successful candidate will possess some or all the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience (KSAE). To receive an interview, each of the following KSAE must be documented in your cover letter. If you do not have experience with one or more of the KSAE listed below, simply say so:
  • Knowledge of the general methods and techniques associated with creating geographic information products and interpreting data in a GIS environment.
  • Knowledge of various GIS data types, projections, and output formats.
  • Knowledge of current GIS software capabilities and limitations (ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, Adobe Photoshop, MS Office).
  • Knowledge of the techniques and principles associated with organizing, storing and maintaining the integrity of spatial data.
  • Knowledge of cartographic and graphic design principles such as symbology/color, labeling, and design layout.
  • Knowledge of field data types and collection methods.
  • Experience editing GIS datasets and creating/maintaining topologies.
  • Experience creating digital and printed maps for varied projects.
  • Experience interpreting and analyzing spatial data.
  • Experience digitizing GIS data from hard copy sources and digital on-screen sources.
  • Skill in incorporating aesthetic value into GIS products.
  • Skill in communicating technical GIS concepts to an agency's non-GIS staff.
