Participants will engage in benchmark recovery, which includes:

• Reconnaissance: locating NGS passive control monuments via GIS and field work;
• Recovery: executing survey of recovered benchmark with proper documentation for submission to OPUS shared solutions;
• Report: submission of findings to NGS and DENA GIS Specialist.

Additionally, participants will conduct field surveys to establish ground control for structure-from-motion photogrammetric products produced by both fixed wing and small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) flights. Park boundary markers and Bureau of Land Management survey markers are a secondary goal for survey- or mapping-grade recovery. Shorter mapping projects requiring immediate attention may arise throughout the season. The participant may also have the opportunity, in conjunction with the Alaska Geographic/Murie Science and Learning Center, to work with and lead small groups of youth (middle and high school students) through the concepts of GPS and benchmark recovery.

Upon successful completion of the GIP internship, the participant is eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award. This position is offered through the National Park Service's Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Internship Program in partnership with Environmental Stewards and The Geological Society of America.

The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) increasingly use mapping to monitor progress and manage watersheds. ADEC identifies Alaska Clean Water Action priority waters and impaired waters to protect water quality and restore polluted waters to healthier conditions, but GIS data is limited on these waters. The intern will receive training on how to update and modernize GIS data for impaired and priority waters in preparation for catchment analysis. The intern will update GIS data on impaired and priority waters using the National Hydrography Dataset and the United States Geological Service (USGS) Hydrography Event Management tool. Results of this work will facilitate the process of USGS and EPA defining catchment basins for those watersheds.

Major Duties:

This IT position performs a wide variety of IT functions including: providing technical expertise in support of deployed IM applications; developing hardware or software technical requirements for new or modified IT systems; analyzing and developing optimal hardware and software configurations; providing technical guidance in the sustainment process of various IT systems; and providing data platform storage deposit and retrieval functions; and server system administration duties.

Conducts analyses and recommends solutions or improvements for IT issues affecting the IM and R10 Regional Office. May work on various teams that cut across many of the IT specialty areas within Regional and inter-Regional IM realm.

Analyzes alternatives and recommends solutions relating to long term operational support for various information systems. Reviews general business and functional requirements that support the need for systems and recommends solutions or alternatives. Examines data, ensures accurate and timely data storage techniques and schedules of IM data throughout the Region. Resolves inconsistencies in information, and implements changes or improvements to existing platforms.

Participates in conferences, workshops, and task groups within the agency or with external partners as required. Performs a variety of other duties related to information technology (IT) projects involving IM program-related issues that contain complicated technical elements.

The Region 10 information management organization will soon be advertising one GIS web map and mobile application specialist position (GS-101/401/1301-11/12) located at the Regional Office in Juneau, Alaska. The incumbent will work as a member of the IM Staff to assist developing mobile field geospatial data collection applications that work with ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Portal. Additionally the incumbent will lead the Forest Service Region 10 web mapping development team and deploy applications and services using ArcGIS Server for desktop, web and mobile use. The incumbent will work under the guidance of the Regional Geospatial Program Manager.

Major duties include, but are not limited to:

• Provide technical support, advice, consultation, and assistance to various levels of staff (resources specialists, engineers, scientists, planners, subject matter experts, and managers) to identify and develop GIS applications to support resource management decisions for multiple units or a large geographical region.
• Lead the Alaska Region web mapping development team and provide guidance, technical support, and help in adopting industry’s best business practices in geospatial web/mobile development.
• Empower public and decision-makers with information using the ArcGIS Platform (ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Mobile, ArcGIS SDE, and ArcGIS Online).
• Develop and deploy mobile GIS applications using feature services for field data collection.
• Deploy ArcGIS server focused web and mobile applications using various runtime SDKs from ESRI.
• Assist in teaching Mobile GIS classes and maintaining mobile applications using ArcPad Studio and runtime SDKs.
