Hilcorp offers internships to Computer Science & Computer Systems Engineering students based upon previous experience and current course work/enrollment in Computer Science programs. GIS Interns will work in the corporate office, located in Anchorage, AK.

Responsibilities: Junior, Senior, or recently graduated Geomatics* students will work directly with the Hilcorp Geospatial Team on enterprise GIS implementations and web mapping systems, including automation & programming.

Qualifications:

• *Graduating 2021, 2022, or recently graduated students working towards their BS/BA in Geomatics, Geological Sciences, Computer Science or BS in Computer Systems Engineering are encouraged to apply. Other disciplines with minor in Geographic Information Systems will also be considered.
• Intern should be a full-time student or recently graduated with the last 12 months, with an interest in pursuing a career in the oil & gas industry.
• Students or graduates must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
• Ability to work a 5-day weekly office schedule in Anchorage.
• Other duties as assigned by management.
• Student must be an AK resident or enrolled with an accredited school in Alaska.

The event will be held virtually via GoToWebinar and it will be free to attend.

Plans are in the works to have a Virtual Geospatial Gathering event in March.

The goal is to provide a platform for the Alaskan geospatial community to share work, interact with relevant professionals, participate in learning, receive updates, and build community during this pandemic induced time of physical isolation and distancing. AAUG/URISA annual meeting will be held during one of the breaks. Other groups are encouraged to do the same. Information will be updated here as it develops.

Dates for the gathering will be the week of March 1-5, 2021. We are anticipating it will be a one to three-day event. Exact duration will depend on the amount of content submitted. The event will be held virtually via a webinar platform and it will be free to attend.

Job Announcement

Land use in and around Denali National Park and Preserve has changed since the inception of the park 100 years ago - from Gold Rush-era mining to proposed visitor services' facilities, the ebb and flow of development and restoration is obvious at multiple temporal and spatial scales across the landscape of the park and surround areas. As the park moves into the next 100 years, many park management decisions will be related to land use. Documenting the historic, current, and proposed land uses from existing geospatial data, historic aerial and oblique photos, oral histories, satellite imagery, and proposed project documents into a concise geospatial dataset, along with producing map products and written reports, will allow managers both a visual and quantitative assessment of land use trends.

Participants will assist with documenting changes of land use in and around Denali National Park and Preserve by:

• Organizing and/or collecting existing data (e.g., aerial photos, satellite imagery) for scanning, georeferencing, and digitizing
• Assisting in creating primary (e.g., flight lines and orthomosaics) and secondary mapping products (e.g., 3D models from stereo-pair compilations, kernel density maps) to assess the change over time
• Providing metadata and writing standard operating guidelines for data creation and access

Additionally, participants may have the opportunity to assist in field surveys to establish ground control for structure-from-motion photogrammetric products produced by both historic and future fixed wing and small unmanned aerial systems flights. Shorter cartographic projects requiring immediate attention may arise throughout the season, such as support for pressing management issues or incident response. The participant may also have the opportunity, in conjunction with the Alaska Geographic/Murie Science and Learning Center, to work with and lead small groups of youth (middle and high school students) through the concepts of GIS or cartography during field days and holiday events.

Answering historic and current land-use questions often drive management decisions related to park policy, regulations, and guidelines. SIP participants will assist in providing the best data available to managers for making these decisions.

This position is offered through the National Park Service's Scientists in Parks (SIP) Program in partnership with Stewards Individual Placement Program (Stewards) and The Geological Society of America (GSA).

The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent legal resident (“green-card-holder”) between the ages of 18 and 30 years old, inclusive, or veterans up to age 35. AmeriCorps is a program that engages individuals in intensive community service work with the goal of “helping others and meeting critical needs in the community”. The SIP Program is supported through AmeriCorps by providing a Segal Education Award in addition to the SIP’s living stipend and relocation allowance. Upon successful completion of the SIP position, the SIPs (AmeriCorps members) are eligible for a $1,638 - $6,195 pre-tax education award that can be used for paying back student loans or for continuing their education. The amount of the education award is based on the length of the position. AmeriCorps limits the number of terms an individual can serve to 4 terms. If an applicant has previously completed 4 SIP or other AmeriCorps positions, they will not be eligible to apply for an additional SIP position.

• Participates in daily team meeting and in surveillance, investigation, and analysis of this major public health issue with the COVID Data Dissemination team members.
• Participate in the daily update of the COVID-19 Data Response Hub, which periodically includes weekend updates and support for the data hub

The Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented advanced GIS Analyst to perform important grant-funded work to continue development of an Alaska-wide GIS database of geologic information. The database uses an Alaska-pioneered, extended national data standard for geologic maps. DGGS’ in-development geologic map production system is of interest to other state geologic surveys and the U.S. Geological Survey. The position will also use programming to develop potentially high-profile GIS web applications and write scripts to streamline data management processes that may be distributed nationally. This position will be part of the DGGS Geologic Information Center (GIC) team and work with other GIS-focused staff to manage and distribute Alaska geologic data. This position is anticipated to last 1.5 years with the possibility of extensions through future grant funding.

The mission of the Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys is to determine the potential of Alaskan land for production of metals, minerals, fuels, and geothermal resources, the locations and supplies of groundwater and construction material, and the potential geologic hazards to buildings, roads, bridges, and other installations and structures (AS 41.08.020). The division views public geologic information as a key element in unlocking our natural resources, protecting communities, and helping grow Alaska's economy. Geologic Information Center (section) staff supports the dedicated scientists of DGGS who create geologic data to further the division’s mission.

Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Manage the division’s geologic map production workflow, which is based on Geologic Map Schema (GeMS) and utilizes both ArcGIS Enterprise and PostgreSQL.
• Populate and maintain the content of the multi-map enterprise PostgreSQL geodatabase with published single-geologic-map geodatabases.
• Administer GIS data in the division’s enterprise multi-map and numerous single-map PostgreSQL geodatabases, ensuring GIS data quality and maintaining the map data archive.
• Perform programming tasks to develop and maintain web-based user interfaces to GIS resources, including the development of internal and public-facing map services and applications.
• Create and document map production workflow components, automations, and code.

The successful candidate will demonstrate or provide experience related to the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) and core competencies:

• Expert knowledge of ArcGIS Enterprise (ArcGIS Server, Portal for ArcGIS, and ArcGIS Image Server), geodatabase administration, and PostgreSQL
• Experience with programming and scripting languages (for example, Python, JavaScript, SQL, HTML) and frameworks/APIs (for example, Leaflet, ArcGIS API, REST web services) suitable for the development of web maps in a UNIX-based environment
