Training Announcement: Introduction to GIS

GeoNorth is now offering Introduction to GIS Classes.  Taught by highly experienced GIS professionals sharing real-world project experience, GeoNorth’s class provides a great introduction to using the software, and builds a strong base for getting the most out of your investment in Geographic Information Systems (GIS).  This course introduces the fundamental concepts of ArcGIS Desktop software and teaches how to use it to visualize, display, create, manage, interpret, and edit geographic data.  In course exercises, you will use ArcGIS tools to perform common GIS tasks.  By the end of the course, you will understand the range of ArcGIS Desktop functionality and be prepared to work with the software on your own to create GIS maps, work with geographic data, and perform GIS editing.  And as an option, our instructors can provide onsite training at your facility.  Course materials are included with registration.

Two optional 2-day classes are being offered April 20 & 21 and April 22 & 23 at GeoNorth’s Anchorage office location, and cost $800 for a 2-day session.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service, Region 7 (Alaska) Division of Migratory Bird Management (MBM) is seeking to fill a Wildlife Biologist (GS-0486-11/12) vacancy in the Waterfowl Survey Program, based in Anchorage, Alaska.

The successful applicant will apply their advanced skills in GIS and wildlife biology as they work with a team of waterfowl biologists, biologist-pilots, biometricians, and managers to design and conduct statewide waterfowl monitoring programs that support conservation decision-making.

The Alaska MBM Waterfowl Survey Team is a diverse group of biologists who are responsible for collecting and analyzing data from some of the longest and most extensive wildlife surveys in the world. Although based in Anchorage, the team conducts surveys throughout the state of Alaska.

The major duties include, but are not limited to:​

  • Design aerial and ground-based waterfowl surveys to estimate abundance and population trends of migratory birds.
  • Use geospatial survey data to analyze ​waterfowl distribution in relation to habitats, climate, phenology, and human-influences on the landscape.
  • Produce maps, figures, and displays that communicate spatial patterns of ​waterfowl distribution.
  • Archive, manage and share waterfowl survey data and metadata using geodatabase formats.
  • ​Participate in aerial and ground-based surveys ​and contribute to syntheses of long-term datasets to address conservation concerns.
