The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation is recruiting for a Department GIS Coordinator to oversee DEC's interactive mapping of the most beautiful geography on Earth. This position offers an incredible opportunity to participate in establishing GIS for the State of Alaska (it's said that Mars is better mapped than Alaska).

DEC is looking for a motivated, self-directed, and technically adept individual to serve as the Department GIS Coordinator. This position administers and manages the Department's mapping technologies and GIS servers and provides comprehensive coordination of GIS efforts and activities both internal to the Department and with external agencies and partners. Additionally, the position is responsible for setting Department GIS policies, standards, and best practices.

Key responsibilities include the following:
  • Playing the principle role in coordination of GIS activities across the Department, to include leading DEC's GIS User Group, GIS Technical Advisory Group, and GIS Executive Steering Committee;
  • Administration of Microsoft SQL Server, ArcGIS for Server, and ArcSDE geodatabase servers;
  • Maintaining DEC's ArcGIS Online Organizational web site;
  • Conducting Department-wide GIS integration and planning;
  • Providing technical direction, governance, and support services for GIS;
  • Project management and consultation;
  • Representing the Department in interagency GIS collaboration and geospatial sharing efforts; and
  • Providing back-up for the Department Database Administrator
