Job Posting: Temporary Engineering Helper - GIS

Position is expected to begin in April/May and end in August/September.

Job Summary:
Under direct supervision, the Engineering Helper provides assistance and support to ENSTAR's Engineering department with regard to file maintenance and maintaining the Geographic Information System.

Essential Functions:
  • Make updates to GIS data as directed.
  • Database and file entry: Organize and link project data to GIS system. Review project files to ensure all data is in place.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum second year geomatics / GIS / surveying student or equivalent.
  • Training in one or more of the following areas preferred: Geomatics, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering.
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS Desktop software.
  • Valid Alaska Driver's License and be qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of the ENSTAR's Driving Policy.
  • Ability to pass a drug, background, credit, past employment, and driving record screening.
  • Knowledge of GIS concepts and cartography.
  • Should have knowledge of geomatics.
  • Must be able to read the Company's as-builts.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work effectively and cooperatively with all levels of management, staff, and the public; exhibit a professional manner in dealing with others in difficult circumstances or to resolve issues.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. Proven ability to prepare clear and understandable written documentation and communication materials.
  • Must have the ability to contribute in a team environment or independently.
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills.

Event Announcement: 2019 Great Alaska Sportsman Show

VIP Lounge: GPS for Outdoor Enthusiasts

GIS Specialists Joel Cusick and Chris Felker will teach you how to mark your current location using a GPS receiver, how to navigate back to “home” along a route and how to use a compass and map when all else fails. A free satellite map showing the Sullivan Arena will be provided, along with GPS devices to practice on. This seminar is presented by the Alaska Arc User Group and National Park Service and is for adults, kids, hunters, fishermen, aviators, snowmachiners and hikers.

Volunteers are needed to support AAUG in this annual outreach event.

Event Announcement: Alaska Geographic GeoBee

The Alaska Geographic GeoBee is looking for volunteers on March 29 to moderate, judge, time, and keep score at the 2019 State GeoBee. This exciting event features the top one-hundred 4-8 grade geography students from around the state, competing to answer questions written by the National Geographic Society. The winning student gets the opportunity to travel to Washington, DC, to compete in the national GeoBee.

The GeoBee is also looking for donations of prizes/goodies to give to the students to help spark their enthusiasm in geography. This year's GeoBee is Friday, March 29, at the Egan Center in downtown Anchorage.
