Quantum Spatial is seeking GIS Specialists to work onsite at a federal government client facility in Anchorage, AK. Primary responsibilities include research, identification and acquisition of specific datasets; developing data into geospatial layers which conform to defined national data standards, are topologically correct and are in accordance with FGDC and client metadata standards; and to ensure that all data are consolidated at the national level. Secondary responsibilities include performing quality control (QC), reporting, and metadata documentation. Only qualified candidates meeting the specific requirements below will be considered for these positions.

Tasks
  • Research, identify and acquire specific data from staff in order to develop those data into geospatial layers that conform to defined data standards, which are topologically correct and are documented in accordance with FGDC and agency metadata standards. Ensure that all state level data compilations roll up to national views.
  • Utilize primary tools, to include ArcGIS for Desktop (ArcMap), Enterprise Geodatabases (formerly SDE), and other geospatial software components that may vary by office.
  • Convert all formats of data acquired into single, well documented geospatial files at a state or national level using a versioned enterprise geodatabase environment.
  • Create a process and method for each dataset using versioned workflows such that geospatial data flows from various local office locations and rolled into national datasets using an existing national geodatabase replication process.
  • Create and ensure client and FGDC standard metadata is associated with each geospatial file, using any one of the available edit programs.
  • Prepare maps to demonstrate progress or to illustrate data complexities and issues.
  • Assist client staff with data collection, consolidation, sharing and general data management activities. This may include: Identifying and acquiring data in native formats from various client offices. Priority data lists and methods will be provided, requiring exploring, searching, and documenting data via communication with a wide variety of client staff.
  • Generate geospatial data, databases, analysis, maps, services and applications according to client standards or specifications. Document any development activities for future usage within the organization.
  • Communicate workflows for data maintenance and quality improvements to field office and state office personnel.
  • Communicate and work with an extended interdisciplinary team across the agency to ensure proper understanding of programmatic data elements, client-specific data standards and guidance for geospatial methods.
  • Provide demonstrations and briefings for client staff on progress and results, and with client leadership for all aspects of the work.
  • Prepare weekly status/progress reports.
  • Participate in monthly/weekly conference calls and in-person meetings as scheduled.
  • Attend trainings and orientation as scheduled.
  • Periodic travel may be required.

The Department of Natural Resources is recruiting for a full-time permanent Research Analyst II position within the Information Resource Management Section of the Support Services Division located in the Atwood Building in downtown Anchorage.

This position works alongside GIS Analysts in the GIS Services Unit and is responsible for organizing and researching update requests of DNR's spatial data. DNR's spatial databases house the GIS data for management activity on state owned land and water at a parcel level. This includes land ownership, land classifications and restrictions, state and federal surveys, and surface and subsurface authorizations on land and water owned or managed by DNR. This position also works with application developers to evaluate needed enhancements of GIS and land records applications to prioritize refactoring needs. This position is also the primary security administrator for the department's Land Administration System.

The key responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Research and analyze source documents necessary for GIS data capture, evaluating the accuracy and reliability of the data to ensure integrity of the GIS products;
  • Read and interpret source information such as USGS maps, photo imagery, raster images, digital data, federal master title plats, state and federal survey documents, sketch maps, and written legal descriptions;
  • Conduct research regarding needed enhancements of existing GIS databases and applications, and evaluate business procedures to ensure application and database refactoring will meet business needs;
  • Conduct routine data maintenance, database user support, and gather and statistically analyze user feedback and data as new systems and interfaces come on-line;
  • Operate plotters, printers, and scanners.

As a result, the Information Systems and Services Division (ISSD), Geospatial Engineering Services section (GES) is looking for an experienced and motivated GIS professional to join our growing section. Roles and Responsibilities
This position has three primary responsibilities within ISSD/GES:

  • GIS Project Coordination: Serve as a GIS coordinator for projects that require collaboration between the business unit and ISSD/GES. Candidates for this position should have a diverse blend of demonstrated knowledge, skills, and experience in the following areas:

  • Spatial analysis and reporting

Job Posting: GIS Summer Internship

The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) increasingly use mapping to monitor progress and manage watersheds. ADEC identifies Alaska Clean Water Action priority waters and impaired waters to protect water quality and restore polluted waters to healthier conditions, but GIS data is limited on these waters. In addition, some of the mapping tools available elsewhere in the United States, such as National Hydrography Dataset+ (NHD+), is just being deployed on a larger scale in Alaska. The intern will receive training on how to update and modernize GIS data for impaired and priority waters in preparation for catchment analysis. The intern will refine GIS data on impaired and priority waters using the NHD and the United States Geological Service (USGS) Hydrography Event Management tool. The intern will also become part of the inter-agency team working to bring NHD+ to Alaska.
