DGGS is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Geologist who is interested to expand their knowledge of GIS and digital geologic map making. The incumbent will learn how to prepare geologic map GIS data for incorporation in an authoritative statewide GIS database of Alaska geologic information and the national repository for geologic data managed by the U.S. Geological Survey. DGGS' geologic data management system uses an Alaska-pioneered, extended national data standard (AK GeMS) for geologic maps based on ESRI ArcGIS software. Preparing GIS files for dissemination to the public and agencies is the primary duty of the position. As part of the DGGS Mineral Resources Section, the incumbent will also be a team member on geologic mapping projects and other DGGS projects as needed.

In addition to the standard Minimum Job Qualifications for a Geologist 1, the following knowledge and skills are REQUIRED for this position.   • Experience interpreting and using traditional geologic maps; ability to synthesize basic geologic data (structural geology, mineralogy, petrology) from large datasets, maps, and reports into independently derived ideas and conclusions.
  • Some experience using GIS to analyze and manage data.
  • Some experience collecting detailed, accurate geological observations and samples.
  • Some experience conducting geologic fieldwork and mapping in remote locations and/or rugged conditions.
  • Competency with teamwork: Encourages and facilitates cooperation, pride, trust, and group identity; fosters commitment and team spirit; works with others to achieve goals.
