Outreach Announcement

The USDA Forest Service - Alaska Region, Engineering & Information Management, is outreaching to fill a Permanent Full-Time Biological Science/Resource Information Specialist, GS-0401/1301-12/13 position. The position serves the Alaska Regional Office and is responsible for planning support and developing a comprehensive, integrated natural resource information program for the Region.

This position is located at the Regional Office in Juneau, Alaska. Positions located in the Alaska Region receive a locality payment of 25.16%. Additionally, employees located in Juneau, Alaska receive a 5.31% Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) which is not federally taxed. Position provides leadership, scientific expertise, and support in addressing a wide array of resource information needs including, but not limited to:

  • Leads the establishment and management of natural resource information systems to facilitate spatial and tabular analyses and assures the integrity, compatibility, and cost efficiency of corporate resource information databases.
  • Serves as Regional technical authority, consultant, troubleshooter, implementation lead, and training contact for natural resource information applications. Establishes and maintains processes and procedures to provide for quality control of the region’s corporate data assets.
  • Plans and coordinates the development, management, implementation, and evaluation of database management practices and standards across the Region and with multiple staff areas at the Region and Forest organizational levels.
  • Advises Regional Office Directors in special problems relating to policy changes, additional proposals, coordination and relationships among Forest Service resource information processes.
  • Serves as representative and spokesperson for the Region at national resource information meetings, workshops and conferences. Provides input to and coordinates with Washington Office and other Regional program managers on the development of policies and implementation of national corporate databases.
  • Supervises up to six GS-11/12 Biological Science/Resource Information Specialists and/or Information Technology Specialists. Plans the work to be accomplished by the unit, assigns work to employees, and establishes production or quality standards for the unit’s work.
